    The 4^th International Symposium on Ultra-fast Phenomena and Terahertz Waves was co-organized by Tianjin University and Capital Normal University from 29^th to 31^st March 2008, sponsored by the ¡°111 Project¡± from Foreign Expert Bureau of MOE, NSFC£¨National Scientific Fund Committee£©, as well as the Science and Technology Committee of Tianjin(STCT). The attendants include professor Qing Pan from Information Department of NSFC, Director Yingzi Fan from the Department of International Cooperation of STCT and the Dean, professor Kexin Xu, from College of Precision Instrument and Opto-Electronics Engineering, Tianjin University. Vice president of Tianjin University, professor Gequn Shu, presented salutatory in the opening ceremony.

    The major topics of this symposium consist of the production, inspection and transmission of THz wave, ultra-fast laser and photoelectron, THz spectrum, image and sensing, plasmon resonance effect of THz waves, negative refractive index as well as the theory and application of THz radiation. Since ultra-fast laser technology and THz wave research is the frontline area of photoelectron research, the biyearly International Symposium on Ultra-fast Phenomena and Terahertz Waves functions as an advanced seminar attracting scientists in this field at home and abroad. The especially insightful reports were presented by professor Daniel R.Grischkowsky and professor Xicheng Zhang. Other 22 invited reports were made by the well-known experts in this filed. Scholars and researchers had a deep communication and discussion on the hot issues related to THz research in China as well as the potential international exchanges and co-operations. All of the participants sang high praise to the scientific attainment and managerial achievement of this symposium. Furthermore, it is also agreed that this successful symposium will promote the development and application of THz in China, accelerate THz research in Tianjin Universtiy so that Tianjin City can play a more positive and dynamic role leading the ultra-fast laser and THz research domestically.

    The famous experts participated in this symposium included 5 academicians of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences): Guoguang Mu, Shenggang Liu, Guozhen Yang, Peiheng Wu and Jianquan Yao; 1 academician of CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering): Dianyuan Fan. Other well-known scholars included researcher Ruxin Yang, vice chair of Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of CAS, professor Huichun Liu from Canadian Research Committee, researcher Li Wang from Institute of Physics of CAS, etc. More than 150 related scholars, researchers and students from Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Xi¡¯an Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Institute of Physics of CAS, Capital Normal University, Tianjin University and Nankai University participated in this symposium.
